The HashMark app icon

PDF to Markdown, one right-click away.

HashMark turns PDFs into clean Markdown on your Mac. Headings, lists, tables and images come across, scanned pages are read with on-device OCR, and nothing ever leaves your computer.

Available on the Mac App Store. Requires a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later.

Right from Finder

Select a PDF. Choose Convert to Markdown. Done.

Right-click one PDF or a whole selection in Finder and pick Convert to Markdown. Each PDF gets a .md file beside it, named to match.

Prefer a window? Drop PDFs onto HashMark, click Convert and watch the progress bar.

What it keeps

The structure, not just the words.

Copying text out of a PDF gives you a wall of broken lines. HashMark reads the layout and writes Markdown you can open in any editor, paste into notes, or hand to a language model.

Headings

Larger and bolder type becomes #, ## and ### headings, so the outline survives.

Paragraphs

Broken lines are joined back into paragraphs, and running headers and page numbers are left out.

Bold and italic

Emphasis is carried across as **bold** and *italic* where the PDF uses those fonts.

Lists

Bulleted and numbered lists come out as Markdown lists, not loose lines of text.

Tables

Text that lines up in columns is recognised as a table and rebuilt as a Markdown table.

Images

Pictures are saved in a folder beside the Markdown file and linked where they appeared.

Scanned PDFs too

When a page is a picture of text rather than text, HashMark reads it with the text recognition built into macOS. It runs on your Mac, works offline, and turns a scan into Markdown you can search and edit.

Private by design

Every conversion happens on your Mac. Your PDFs are never uploaded, there is no account to make, and HashMark collects no analytics. Contracts, medical letters and bank statements stay where they are. Read the privacy policy.

Batch conversion

Select a hundred PDFs and convert them in one go.

Native to Apple silicon

A small, fast Mac app for macOS 15 or later.

Nothing uploaded

Works with Wi-Fi off. No servers, no waiting in a queue.
